As this turbulent year comes to an end, we’ve seen the best and the worst side of life, people, and business. How about you give yourself the gift of reflection?

Click here and let me know your answer to these 2 questions:

1. Use ONE WORD to describe the WORST of 2021
2. Use ONE WORD to describe the BEST of 2021

I’d love to hear your reflections…

As you head off towards the festive season and possibly some time off, remember to clear your plate and have a good rest, and don’t multitask your vacation time.

This means taking a real break with some good rest, time with family and friends, and a proper disconnect from work-related stuff. Even if you’re not going anywhere, it will only help you be fresh and ready to give 2022 your absolute best.

Some best practices and tips for keeping a check on work while taking a break:
  1. Set aside a specific time for checking email in the day. I recommend once a day for an hour should allow you to scan your emails for items requiring an immediate response. Then shut it down until the next day.
  2. Learn how to scan your emails for important things only. A great tip here is to let your staff know that you’re only scanning emails so if they need an urgent response, they must mark it urgent in the subject line. This also requires some training on your part around what you consider urgent and if they’ve abused that magic subject line, you need to let them know.
  3. Remove email notifications from your phone. When I suggested this to a client last week, she got such a shock. She couldn’t even imagine doing this. What I mean here is that you can continue to receive emails to your phone but don’t let it show a notification every time an email arrives – no banners, pings, alerts at all!
  4. Decide on a time that you’ll switch off devices at night and do it. I recommend 2 hours before bedtime
  5. Set aside specific quality time (to spend with yourself or loved ones) which means – phone free time – during the day too. This could be 30 minutes where you set your devices aside and focus on what you want to do in that moment – anything that’s tech free.
