Some time ago I was working with my client, Nathalie, helping her prepare for a presentation to her Board of Directors. She’s a General Manager of a division that was going through a tough time and wanted to propose a new approach that would help overcome some of the challenges and put them on a path to profitability.

She took me through her ideas and how she wanted to communicate them. She began by giving a synopsis of some urgent challenges the business was facing and then moved on to her proposal for dealing with those. When she finished, I asked her, “how much do you believe what you just told me?”

The look on her face said it all.

We needed to take a new approach and recreated the presentation. First, we needed to get clear on Nathalie’s key message. What does she want the Board to walk away with? It needed to be fully aligned with her stand on the topic. She needed to know her own message, get fully behind it and then decide on the ideas that support that message.

A year later, Nathalie was promoted.

Sometimes we find ourselves repeating messages handed down to us from our ‘bosses’ in order to ‘tow the company line.

Know the feeling?

To be persuasive and influential, you need to take a stand and align your message with your own beliefs.

In times of crisis, it’s even more critical to believe what you say and to communicate a LOT! People need to hear real, genuine messages even when they’re painful. If you’re just trying to appease or get away with a message that feels like a brush off, you’ll lose your support.

How much of what you do on a daily basis do you believe? -Share in the comments below-I’d love to know.
