The Illusion of Certainty
Here’s what a TV series taught me about life, leadership, and the stories we tell ourselves.
We stumbled upon Adolescence, on Netflix, by accident. My husband and I were looking for something to watch—something that wouldn’t demand weeks of our time, something meaningful yet unassuming. We had never heard of it before, had no expectations.
What we got was a gut punch. A wake-up call.
A seemingly regular family—two parents, two kids, an ordinary life in an ordinary neighbourhood. And then, one morning, their world shatters. The police smash down their door and arrest their 13-year-old son for murder.
This could never happen to us.
That’s the instinctive thought, isn’t it?
When something incomprehensible happens, we look for explanations.
There must be a reason.
Was he abused? Did the parents fail him?
What was the missing piece? What’s the thing that makes this make sense?
Because life needs to make sense!
That’s the story we tell ourselves. That if we do the right things, follow the right path, and check all the right boxes, we can prevent chaos from touching our lives. That there is always a cause, an effect, a lesson wrapped up in a neat little bow.
But this series refused to give us that comfort. No dramatic reveals, no satisfying explanations.
Just the raw, unfiltered chaos of real life—where things don’t always have clear answers, where good and bad aren’t always neatly defined, where we are often left sitting with more questions than answers.
And the cinematography was the same – keeping us in the realness of the moment, however uncomfortable it was.
And here’s what struck me the most. How much we crave certainty. How addicted we are to knowing. We want life, leadership, and business to be explainable, rational, predictable.
But the truth is, they aren’t.
Leadership—and life—is about making decisions in the unknown.
It’s about making space for complexity, knowing that not everything has a clear answer, and still moving forward. It’s about leading through uncertainty, when the path isn’t clear, when there is no perfect answer, when the weight of responsibility feels overwhelming.
And—you don’t have to carry it alone.
The greatest leaders don’t navigate uncertainty by themselves. They know that to navigate uncertainty powerfully, you build partnerships, create spaces where you can be real, and surround yourself with people who can think alongside you.
Because when life and leadership don’t make sense (and often, they won’t), the real power is in bringing people along, sharing the complexity and doing your best.
That’s where transformation happens—shifting your mindset from certainty to curiosity, from safety to creativity, from getting it right to learning together.
Being ok with being uncomfortable means you make room for growth.
