The night I thought the sun would never rise

It was a particularly hard week last week in Israel, where we really got to see darkness and evil in action. It made me think about how when you’re in darkness, it really can feel like it just takes over everything and then I remembered this…

When I climbed Kilimanjaro, I nearly didn’t make it to the summit.

Frozen. Weak. Exhausted. Oxygen-deprived. My mind started playing tricks on me.

Our guide told us that all we need to do is keep walking, one step after another, until we see the sunrise—and then we’d know we were close.

But as I trudged on, in total darkness, headlamps flickering above and below me, I reached a breaking point.

I truly believed the sun would not rise that day.

I thought I was stuck in this never-ending blackness, this upward climb, frozen and weak and that this would be the first day in the history of the world where the sun did not come up.

I truly believed that thought! Remember, oxygen deprivation does weird things to your brain…

But of course—the sun did rise.

The sun always rises.

And that’s the thing about dark times.

When we’re in them, it’s hard to see the light. Hard to believe it even exists.

But the truth is—the sun doesn’t disappear. It’s just hidden from view.

And just like that climb, life moves in cycles.

Highs and lows. Darkness and light.

When we take a snapshot of a moment – that’s all we see. But if we remember the cycles, the ups and the downs, we know that a better time will come.

So when you find yourself in the dark, remember:

You don’t have to see the sun to know it’s there.

Keep moving. Keep believing.

The light always returns.

What’s one thing that helps you keep going when things are tough?

Here’s something that works for me:

When I feel lost in the darkness, I pause and ask myself,

What do I know to be true, even if I can’t see it right now?

This simple question shifts my focus from fear to faith. And faith is stronger than hope.

When you’re facing a challenging time, try asking this question and see what comes up.

The sun is there—you just have to remind yourself, trust it.

Here’s to trusting the light, even when we can’t see it—because the sun always rises.
