When you say “I’m fine” but you mean something else

You can be in meetings all day, surrounded by people, inbox overflowing, team relying on you… and still feel alone.

Most of us may not call it loneliness.

We call it being busy, carrying the responsibility or just doing what needs to be done.

But there’s a moment, usually late at night or in the midst of a big decision that needs to be made, when the noise around you drops just long enough for the truth to surface.

You realise you’re the one holding all the pieces.

You’re the one people come to.

And somewhere along the way, you stopped having someone who can hold you.

That’s the kind of loneliness we talk about on the latest episode of UNFILTERED, released today.

Not social loneliness, but leadership loneliness.

A client once told me, “Everyone comes to me… but our coaching sessions are the only place I can really let it all out.”

And here’s the part many leaders don’t realise when they get the promotion, loneliness is part of the package.

It’s a signal that you’ve stepped into a space where fewer people understand you, that isolation is creeping in because your role has outgrown your current circle and most importantly, it’s a signal that you need support as much as you’re there to give it.

In this week’s episode of UNFILTERED – Courageous Conversations about the Loneliness of Leadership, Amy and I talk about what this loneliness is actually pointing to and what you can do with it in a grounded, practical way that leaders can actually use.

We explore:

  • Seeing loneliness as part of your evolution as a leader
  • How to recognise the early signs of loneliness and what to do with it
  • Why being promoted almost always shifts your sense of belonging
  • How to design your A-Team
  • How to notice what’s really going on

If you’ve ever withdrawn, overworked or stayed composed because you didn’t know who you could be real with, this episode hits close to home.

It might be you or someone you know who looks strong on the outside and not fully supported on the inside.
Please pass it on if it hits a truth.

Here’s to naming the spaces where we feel most alone and finding our way back to connection.

P.S. If you’re giving support all day but can’t remember the last time you received any… that’s not strength. That’s a sign. Reach out and let’s have a conversation.
