A few weeks ago, I came across a fascinating story about a Turkish man,  Beyhan Mutlu. It seems that Beyhan had a little too much to drink, got lost in a forest, and fell asleep for the night. His family began to worry since he hadn’t come home so they reported him missing to the police who instigated a search of the area. Search parties were formed to scour the area for the missing man.

A couple of hours later, Beyhan awakened to the sounds of the search parties, realized they were looking for something, and decided to join them in the search. Only a few hours later did he realize they were actually searching for him!

I enjoyed the story of a man searching for himself. Can you imagine spending a good few hours in a search, only to discover the missing person has been there all along?

Such a great metaphor for life. How often do we repeat the same behaviors hoping for different results? How often do we fall into the same habits we wish we didn’t keep repeating? How often do we feel like we’re going from one thing to another without having a clear purpose in mind, filling our days with busy work, and not enjoying the satisfaction of having achieved something of importance

We often live our life on autopilot, making sure everything around us is taken care of. We focus on everything that needs to get done and we repeat behaviors to save energy and get things done quickly and effortlessly. But there are repeated behaviors that can also hold us back so that we feel like we’re in a vicious repetitive cycle with no forward momentum and sometimes we feel like we’re losing ourselves in all the doing of business and life.

Let’s make sure we remain conscious of the habits we want to create, build and keep and the ones we need to just toss away so we don’t end up going around in circles, looking for something that’s right in front of our eyes, like Beyhan Mutlu.
