“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” – Viktor Frankl

This quote is one of my favourites and it came to me in a coaching session today. It was just what my client needed to hear. No matter what the issue is or how triggered we are by something, we still have a choice – the choice of how to respond.
If you take a moment to notice that space – sometimes it’s just a millisecond, only noticeable if you look for it – and then pause, understand what’s triggering you and choose your response, you become more conscious, intentional, and self-aware.

Invariably your response will be more measured, less defensive, and possibly less provoking for the people involved.

It doesn’t mean you won’t have strong emotions. It means you’ll notice those emotions and choose your course of action with intention.

The more you practice using that space, the more that space grows and the more accustomed you become to exercising your power to choose your response.

That’s growth.

What does this quote stir up for you?
