Right now is the peak time for the Perseid meteor showers in the Northern Hemisphere.

It’s spectacular to watch shooting stars across the night sky.

So we decided to go on a road trip. My husband and I, equipped with mattresses, coffee and blankets, found a remote location (away from the brightly-lit cities) to camp through the night and watch meteors making their flash appearances.

What was interesting was that the meteors didn’t blast the sky en-masse and if you weren’t watching, you could miss them. They came one at a time, from various directions, in different patches of sky.

The fascinating thing was that my husband and I were both watching the sky at the same time and it could be that when Ivan would see a meteor flash by, I didn’t catch sight of it because I was watching somewhere else. I would see one and say – “did you see that one over there?” and he’d missed it.

It all happened so quickly.

We didn’t know where the next meteor was going to come from or in which direction it would go…

And, if we both happened to watch the same patch of sky or if the meteor was large enough, we’d both see it at the same time.

I’d say this is a good description of what our year has been like so far – unexpected changes, each person’s experience is different, every business facing challenges and opportunities. We just don’t know what’s coming next and for how long.

When you’re watching something beautiful like shooting stars, you look forward to the next one showing up so you can share the excitement.

But we must also remember that shooting stars are actually meteors or other pieces of matter that burn up and disintegrate as they hit the Earth’s surface and pass through it. Something that looks beautiful to us is actually the destruction of something else.

Maybe we can bear this in mind as we think about what’s happening around us and create plans for the future.

As a leader, ask yourself how you can bring together the stargazers, watching different patches of sky, to manage what’s next and navigate this new normal.

How?
